This is a conversation I had with ChatGPT a few days ago. (No, I didn’t write the responses.) The back and forth here is very long but I’m including all of it because this moment reminds me of January 2020: Something is speeding towards us and we can’t quite make out its shape yet. We’re all straining to see it more clearly while also watching each other grapple with what it might be and what might happen next. It’s easy to take it all too seriously, but it also feels like it’s impossible to take it seriously enough. Okay, now I sound like a robot. Sorry about that.

I showed this stuff to a friend and she said it depressed her. I told her that every time I read it, it fills me with dread. So why am I pushing this on you? I guess because a lot of people know how strange AI is right now, but a lot of people don’t know. These robots are smart and also alarmingly stupid. The fact that they seem smart but are actually stupid strikes me as dangerous, particularly given how dumb a lot of people are. And why does it feel like the more we let these robots do our jobs, the dumber and sadder we’re going to get?
